On June 9th, students in grades 4 and 5 went on one hour jet boat trips on the Willamette River with Willamette Jet Boats Excusions in Portland. Earlier in the year, the intermediate students participated in a bridge building unit and learned about many types of structural bridge designs. This trip offered first hand looks at many different types of bridges as well as a thorough explanation of Portland bridge history. Oregon geography is also emphasized at the intermediate level, so this trip reinforced several geographical features and locations learned during the year. After the Jet Boat trip, students and staff had lunch and some fun at Cook Park in Tigard as well as some exploration along the banks of the Tualatin River.
For the past six weeks, Ewing Young 4th and 5th graders have been learning about gears, pulleys, wheels and axles, and applying their skills in LEGO robotics programming. Students formed teams of two or three people and learned how to program LEGO robots to follow commands such as going forward and backward, turning, sensing dark or white lines, playing music, and continuously repeating commands. After several weeks of training, our students participated in the Can Do Competitions. First Year students competed in the Can Do tournament. The object is to knock five cans out of a circle in less than 3 minutes. Second Year students competed in the Can Do 2. The objective is to knock six full cans out of a rounded rectangular area in less than 3 minutes. There were many exciting moments in this year's competition and everyone gave it their best effort. This year's winning teams and robots were:
CAN DO
1st place- "Coca Cola" (Rachael, Kiley, Kelli)
2nd place- "Spartan" (Arnesh, Cameron, Rayce)
3rd place- "Horton" (Cassady, Riley)
