The Oregon Department of Education tests students in mathematics, reading, writing, and science each year.
Who is tested?
All 10th grade students take Oregon State Assessments unless a passing score was achieved in 9th grade. Freshman may take the math and science tests if they are enrolled in teh corresponding advanced courses for those subjects. Federal requirements state that all 10th grade students must participate. The participation rate is one criterion the state uses to evaluate schools at both state and federal levels.
How are tests administered?
Testing occurs near the end of the “B” section of English, mathematics and science courses. Students take the tests on computers through a secure online system called Oregon Assessments of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) Students are allowed three attempts to pass the state tests during the school year. Questions are not the same on the first, second or third attempt.
Results
OAKS allows students to see their score immediately upon completion of the test in reading, mathematics and science. Writing results are sent to the school approximately two months after testing. A report for parents that includes all subjects is mailed home during the summer.
Results are also used to determine Federal Adequate Yearly Progress ratings. This state and federal information is included in state report cards released in October. Locally educators use the results to assess strengths and weaknesses in instructional programs.
To help your student be successful on state assessments, parents can:
- Learn when Oregon assessment testing will take place and make sure your student attends school on those days;
- Encourage your student to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast;
- Encourage your student to do his or her best.
