A great showing by our fans:

It was great to see so many students and community members turn out in support of the men’s basketball team Thursday afternoon. Our stands were packed with enthusiastic, appropriate student fans. Despite running into a buzz saw that was the eventual state champion, our crew did a great job cheering. Thanks to Mrs. DeCrevel and the cheerleaders as well as the fine lads who donned their referee’s jerseys one more time in hopes of another Tiger victory.   Friday morning’s game was a better showing for our team but we could not make a couple of free throws and thus went down in defeat in the last 10 seconds 74-72 to McKay HS. All in all it was another great example of the very positive school spirit and fine athletic play shown by the students this winter season.  Today marks the official start of the spring season so I hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as I did and here we go.

As spring break officially starts after school Friday, I will send my next update on the 29th.  I hope you have a restful week and if you are traveling near or far, please be safe. As you may have guessed, I will be working on my golf game and reading a book.

Student report from the State Robotics competition:

Thanks to Reina Soumokil for the following report on the team’s involvement in the competition held at the Memorial Coliseum two weeks ago.

Mr. Malone,

Well, our team didn't bring home the gold, but we got pretty far-

especially for a rookie team. Due to a loss of power to the main part

of our robot, we were knocked out of the competition earlier than we

would've had we continued. Thanks to our outstanding drivers, we made

a great come back on Saturday after a disappointing show on Friday. We

started Saturday's matches at 43, and ended at 16. We would've placed

higher, but we received a red card for bumping an opponent's tower and

our score from that match was disqualified. Had we been allowed to

keep our score; we would have ended in 9th. Even though we didn't get

to the final matches, we learned a lot from the competition that will

help us for next year. While Aaron, Brian, Craig, Greg (team mentor)

were working on the programming or the kinks, about half of the team

worked on tune-ups and small fixes. The rest of us, mostly myself,

Anthony, Brennen, and Natalie, watched the matches and scouted out

teams and ideas for next year. We all had a blast and can't wait for

next year's competition- we'll be ready and kicking to represent NHS

next year at the Oregon regional.

Groups release draft of national academic standards

A draft of common national standards for English and math was released today by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers. The proposal includes specific benchmarks that students should achieve at each grade level. For example, by the end of eighth grade, students should be able to "informally explain why the square root of 2 is irrational." The effort -- endorsed by 48 states -- is being praised for its attempt to bring an "ambitious and coherent" curriculum nationwide, while others are critical of a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Congressional Page Opportunity:

Here is a letter I received this week from Congressman David Wu’s office. This is a great chance for one of our students.

I am pleased to announce that I have been selected to nominate a Congressional Page for the 2010 summer session of the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Page Program in Washington, DC. This session begins with check-in on Sunday, July 11, 2010 and ends on Friday, August 6, 2010.

I am seeking your help getting the word out to interested students. Qualified applicants need to be at least sixteen years old prior to the start of the program and must be a rising junior or rising senior in high school. They must be a citizen of the United States and a full-time resident of the 1st Congressional District. In addition, applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA in their core academic subjects.

Included with this letter is a copy of the application form which you may reproduce as needed. Applications are also available on my website at: www.house.gov/wu. Completed applications with accompanying documentation must be postmarked by Wednesday, March 31, 2010 and received in my Oregon office no later than Friday, April 2, 2010.

An independent selection panel will meet during the week of April 5, 2010 to evaluate the applications, interview candidates and select a nominee. The nominee will be notified on April 12, 2010 and will have until April 14, 2010 to accept or decline the nomination.

This is a tremendous opportunity for young people to see first-hand how our federal government works on a day-to-day basis as well as a chance to meet other students from around the country who share their interest in public service. I hope you will encourage your students to consider applying for this program. If you have questions, please call my Oregon office at 503-326-2901 or 800-422-4003.

Blue School Weekly Update 3/8/2010

Respect…. Relevance…. Perspective

Monday, March 8, 2010

Hi from the Alamo: I am finishing this week’s letter from The ASCD conference in San Antonio. This is the first national conference I have had the pleasure to attend in four years. The sessions are very full but very informative. It is helpful to hear form my colleagues from across the country and it seems we all see the same thing: teachers, staff members and parents working hard to give each student the best education possible in the difficult economic times we face.

On a side note, I watched the annual reenactment of the attack on the Alamo and as a historian, I was glad to see that the Mexican Army does win as the books all told us. I was a little dismayed by the woman I overheard asking a tour guide, “Why did they put the Alamo right in the center of town?”  I am thinking that she wasn’t in class for that part of her U.S. History class.

Let the Good Times Roll :

Congrats to the Boys basketball team who will return to the Big Dance with their win over Centennial Saturday Night. Game time at the Rose Garden will be this Thursday 3:15 versus the top ranked Jesuit Crusaders. This is the only top-ten team that the men’s team did not play in the regular season.  If your student is going to be excused to go to the game, please call the office early this week to let us know. The specifics about rooter buses will come out later this week and I will forward it to you via our list serve.  You can find out more about parking and ticket prices by going to the following website: http://osaa.org/basketball/2010/6aspecinfo.pdf    With a win, we would play Friday afternoon (either McKay or Lincoln) at 3:15.  In the case of a loss, we would play at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning versus McKay or Lincoln).  Go Tigers!!!!

8th Grade Parent /Visitations Set
March 9th   from 6:30-8:00 p.m. is orientation for incoming 9th graders and their families.  There will be a short presentation in the gym on small schools, graduation requirements and activities, followed by an opportunity for parents and students to learn more about elective programs at NHS.

March 16th is an opportunity for incoming 9th graders and their families to come to the high school to learn more about small schools.  Each small school will have a table in the commons.

Blood Drive:
The blood drive was a huge success with over 105 pints extracted from our student body.  That’s a great supply for any vampire. Congrats to Kindra Fish and McKenzie Wolf for their great planning and work with the Red Cross.

A clip from the ASCD daily news brief:

More educators seeking guidance on social-media contact with students
Some educators are finding themselves treading into a virtual minefield when using social media to interact with students. The communication tools can be a valuable way for teachers to connect with students but can also lead to situations where words are misinterpreted. Many teachers say they need clear guidelines, and education leaders nationwide are struggling to determine the appropriate use of text messaging and social-networking sites such as Facebook. Interesting news for teenage drivers and their parents from the NPD:

To all:

I would like to make the NHS student drivers (and their parents) aware

of a new traffic law 811.507: Operating a motor vehicle while using a

mobile communication device. This law makes it a Class D violation for

any juvenile driver to use a "text messaging device or a wireless,

two-way communication device designed to receive and transmit voice or

text communication," (i.e cell phones) while driving. Oregon law does

NOT make any distinction between hands free and hand held phones like

Washington. This law is in effect, and it carries a $123 fine. Officers

will be issuing citations, and I regularly see students leaving the

parking lot on the phone. By giving the students a "heads up," we may

be able to steer some of them in the right direction.

I do not know what the best method for doing this would be. Possibly a

note in the news letter? Any ideas you folks have would be helpful. If

you are not interested, that is fine as well. Thanks.

Carl Busse
