Description

The exquisite miniature carvings known as netsuke were the essence of understated chic for the fashionable merchants of Edo period Japan. From damsels to demons, netsuke have depicted everything from zodiac animals to gods of good luck and from fierce protective demons to beautiful maidens. They were used to secure tobacco pouches, small medicine boxes (inro), and other containers to the sashes of the wearer's pocket-less kimono.

Carved with consummate artistry into a wide variety of imaginative shapes by master craftsmen, netsuke have much to tell us about the customs and folklore of traditional Japan. Worn partially concealed beneath the outer cloaks of the wearer, they served as functional good luck charms, as humorous personal mascots, or treasured miniature works of art.

This exhibition celebrates the Marian P. Miller Collection of more than 100 netsuke, which was generously gifted to the Portland Japanese Garden in 1998.

The exhibition is enhanced by a set of 12 photographic panels of selected netsuke from the Miller Collection revealed in detail by photographer Jonathan Ley.

Personal & Academic Excellence

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  This week is the Teacher Appreciation Week.  Although the teaching profession is yet to receive the kind of respect that it deserves, there is no question that being a teacher is one of the most important jobs that anyone could hold.  I am grateful to work with such a devoted, creative and knowledgeable staff.  If you have a moment this week, please get in touch with your student’s teachers and let them know how much you appreciate all that they do.

Progress Reports – Progress reports will be mailed home this week.

Grant – Congratulations to Ms. Bekcius for being the recipient of an BEC grant.  Science students will soon have the benefit of working with a motion data collection device.

PED Policy – We have noticed an increase in the number of students who are using personal electronic devices (PED) during class time.  The use of cell phones, iPods and other PED is highly disruptive.  If a student is found to be using a PED during class time, the item will be sent to the office and the student will retrieve it at the end of the day.  If the behavior continues, the student will be given a referral and the parent will be called in for a conference.  We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a focused learning environment.

End of the Year Celebration – Please mark your calendars for May 25, 6-8 p.m.  We will honor our students and staff at our third annual Celebration of Personal and Academic Excellence.  Stay tuned for more info.

****New Internship Opportunities*****

The following was taken from www.fastweb.com a scholarship search website.

Internships are one of the most important ways students gain experience and start to make contacts within their field. College students hold most of the available internships but more opportunities are now available for high school students looking to get valuable work experience.

Why intern in high school?

The idea of pursuing an internship probably doesn’t cross most high school students’ minds, which is an excellent reason to pursue one. Work experience at a respected company or organization, especially if it’s related to a field you might pursue in college, will only strengthen your college applications. It’s a great way to stand out from the crowd.

Secondly, an internship will allow you to explore potential careers and courses of study for college. You might confirm that newspaper journalism is the career of your dreams, or find out that software programming isn’t exactly how you’d imagined it. You may also discover other fields and positions you hadn’t considered before.

Finally, an internship can help you understand how a professional organization operates. Within that organization you’ll gain access to valuable contacts who may lead you to other opportunities as you progress through school.

Where to find an internship?

Some organizations like Microsoft, the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian have formal internship programs designed for high school students. Typically, these programs are limited to students in the region. Research companies in the industry that interests you and check their Web sites for opportunities.

Internships are not just available with large corporations in urban areas either. Often local newspapers, museums and other businesses will offer internship opportunities. Start asking around at local business associations to see what is available in your community.

Don’t give up if these companies don’t formally list an internship program for high school students. Try to identify a human resources representative or department manager you can send an email or letter to. Ask your parents, your friends’ parents, your relatives and anyone else who might be willing to help you if they’re aware of any opportunities. Contact professional organizations in your area of interest.

How to apply

Companies with formal internship programs generally have specific procedures outlined on their Web sites. If you’re trying to create your own opportunity, craft a one page resume that outlines your skills, education and interests along with a cover letter that explains your interest in their organization.

This just in--- Local Internship Opportunity:

Farm Youth Volunteers

The Family Farm is an exhibit that offers visitors a chance to interact with goats, sheep, rabbits, and more, as well as the teens that care for them. From September through May teen interns, with help from job shadow volunteers, are responsible for the daily operations of the farm and will work alongside farm mentors to make sure the animals are well cared for and visitors have a good time.

Teens in the 9th through 12th grades may become involved in two ways:

Interns get a hands-on experience in animal care and public interaction. Students make a 21-hour commitment, usually completed in one 3-hour shift each week for seven weeks.

Job Shadow volunteers can do a fun-filled community service project and learn a little of what it is like to be a zookeeper just by committing to 3 or 6 hour shift. In this brief time at the zoo, students will have a chance to help with some of the tasks involved in caring for animals in a zoo setting.

Internships and Job Shadow duties may include:

feeding and grooming animals

cleaning animal areas

performing basic health exams

supervising visitor interactions with animals

leading educational activities and demonstrations

Description: We are currently seeking volunteers to join in the fun, helping us host art and history activities for parents and kids of all ages. This is a great opportunity for those interested in the arts, history, or early childhood education, or simply a fun way to get involved with the community.

Our Family Days are a new program, offered to the community as a fun, free way to learn something new, and spend quality time together as a family. They are co-presented by the Washington County Museum and our partner organization, Print Arts Northwest. Family Days are our most popular program, attracting over 100 people to each event. With this in mind, this is an especially great opportunity for volunteers who don't mind crowds and sometimes even a little chaos.

So far we've done kite-making, watched a puppet show put on by Tears of Joy Theater, heard stories from a variety of presenters, learned how to quilt with the Westside Quilters Guild, and made beautiful print artwork. In November we'll collect colorful leaves from our grounds and make fall placemats and prints with collograph foil plates. Our holiday December Family Day will feature wrapping paper, ornament, and card making with paints and natural materials.

Please contact us for more information or to sign up as a volunteer! Our next dates are Saturday, November 14th and Saturday, December 12th. Both events are from 10am-2pm.

Yellow School Weekly Memo 04-19-10

Personal & Academic Excellence

Hi everyone,

I hope you enjoyed this glorious weekend.  Teresa and I will be at CV on Monday and MV on Tuesday to help our incoming 9th graders with forecasting.  I look forward to meeting our class of 2014.

Our counselors did a fantastic job placing students into small schools.  Not only did they manage to balance by number, gender, special population and academic performance, they also ensured that everyone’s preference was honored.  About half the students indicated what small school they would alike to attend.  Big thanks to Teresa and the other counselors for your terrific work.

Here are some announcements for the week:

Administrative Assistants Week – Please take a moment this week to thank Ronni and Paula for all of their patience, diligence, and hard work.  I am constantly amazed by how well Ronni and Paula juggle their numerous responsibilities and how they do so with grace and care.  Needless to say, our school would not be the same without them.

Wednesday Late Start – Staff time.

Staff Meeting Recap – Thank you all for your participation during our staff meeting last week.  Special thanks to Mischelle for helping us take a closer look at our reading data.  I also appreciated everyone’s interest in learning about our struggling seniors and offering to help support them in whatever way possible.

Senior Projects – YS Senior Project presentations will start on Monday, 4/26.  If you have seniors in any of your classes, please let them know that you are excited to see their presentation.

Unit Plans – Please remember to give me copies of your unit plans.  If you prefer to send me your lesson plans, that is also fine.

College Acceptances – Please encourage your seniors to notify me and/or Teresa when they receive a college acceptance letter.  We’d love to celebrate and document their accomplishments.
